12 Monkeys Development Initiative

Travel that gives back — community development in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Who We Are

The 12 Monkeys Development Initiative (12MDI) is a community-based development organisation working with vulnerable communities living on the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains in Kasese District, Western Uganda.

We focus on improving the lives of women, children, youth, and vulnerable households through integrated programs in health, education, clean water, economic empowerment, and environmental conservation.

A Sustainability Model, Not Short-Term Aid

12MDI is sustainably supported by 12 Monkeys Travel Africa, a responsible travel and volunteer company established to generate long-term funding for community development.

Responsible tourism and ethical volunteer engagement are used as tools for lasting development rather than short-term aid — promoting local ownership, transparency, and financial sustainability for lasting community impact.
